Are you leaving town? Give blood before your vacation
Bowie Memorial Hospital to help maintain community blood supply
BOWIE, Texas (July 13, 2015) – Just like vacations take planning, you can make plans to give whole blood every 56 days. Consider it a sort of ‘community safety net.’ Outdoor activities can increase the number of accidents, so Carter BloodCare needs your help in maintaining the sufficiency and safety of the local blood supply.
Bowie Memorial Hospital is hosting a blood drive from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at 705 E. Greenwood on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Brenda Haile at (940) 872-9361.
When high schools are not in session, the blood supply is affected. Donations from high school blood drives contribute 22 percent of the community blood center’s total annual collections. Young people are welcomed guests at Carter BloodCare donor centers and blood drives – especially in the summer.
This July, Carter BloodCare encourages donors to go ‘pint for a pint.’ Give a pint of ‘life’ and visit carterbloodcare.org for information on choosing a free pint of summer dairy refreshment.
Keep in mind it’s a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water at least an hour before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.
Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
