Early Attic and its proprietor, Nelda Coffman, have been a retail mainstay in Bowie for decades. Since 2011, the shop has been located center stage in Bowie’s historic downtown on Mason Street. “Since opening many years ago, we’ve occupied a few of the downtown buildings. Each time, we’ve taken the opportunity to restore a piece of Bowie history,” Nelda says. As a Bellevue native, Nelda has roots here that run deep. It’s one of the reasons she enjoys retail life so much, a steady stream of friendly faces. Some local. Some traveling through. Each one special.
As a treasure trove for nostalgic antique finds, Early Attic’s charm (and Nelda’s warm welcome) has attracted visitors from far and wide for many years. But, as most of us local folks know, what they discover inside is more than timeless items of delicate porcelain and lace. Unexpected glass cases line the walls, a cache of artistic gems beautifully displayed, offering each visitor a visual experience they won’t soon forget.
Nelda tells us, “I have always loved antiques and I started creating necklaces just for myself. As I would wear them, people would want them. So I decided to offer my creations here in the shop.” And what an offering it is! From short to long, single pieces to layered elegance, the options are endless. “Making jewelry is relaxing for me. It’s also so rewarding to see the vision inside my head as a completed piece. The joy they bring to customers is why I love doing this so much,” Nelda said.
When she’s not at the shop, Nelda is traveling the state (and into Oklahoma) to various shows and events, selling jewels. Her annual presence can always be found at the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Induction event in Fort Worth and she currently has pieces available inside the Donna Howell-Sickles studio in Saint Jo. Nelda also travels to Santa Fe, New Mexico twice a year to find the latest and greatest materials, all while soaking in the area of creativity.
